It's Pay Back Time

The day before yesterday there was no water in my residence for almost 24 hours. Water pumps are very costly, not only for their retail prices, but also due to its mechanism; since every three or four revolution the water is pumped only once, which means that I’m paying three or four times for my electricity bill every time the water stops running. Indecently; today the parliament approved the 200 KD charity and I was wondering if this amount would take care of my extra, unnecessary expenses.
Since it’s a payback time; a word of mouth to Parliament Members: don’t cure the cancer with quick-fix, band-aids; give me a long term solution.

This is for some silly people we have here in Kuwait. Read this 4 Mr. Al Dayeen in Al Rai alaam:-

Any type of human rights abuses should be fought against regardless of whose rights are being abused.

But is it really any different than say a laborer that is supporting his family and yet his employer never pays his salary and his children don't have a house to live in, medical care, an education and slowly starve to death because they have no food?

Therefore, what's better? A quick most like painless death or one that takes months? And are those children also considered martyrs?

16 years ago tomorrow Saddam invaded Kuwait. I'm just wondering what did Lebanon and Hezbollah do for Kuwait during that invasion and 7 month occupation?

Mother Courage said...

trina flowers

just for the record lebanon was the first to show its support to kuwait during the invasion !!

and i refuse to relate hizbullah to lebanon !

Trina Flowers said...

Specifically what kind of support did Lebanon "show?" Whether or not you recognize Hezbollah with the Lebanese people or not, the Lebanese people voted Hezbollah into the Lebanese government!

Jandeef said...

Trina .. Lebanon was the first to condemn without gain/loss considerations like many other nations.

But for the sake of arguement, let's assume lebanon didn't support Kuwait. It's humanity that we're standing up for, be it in Lebanon or else where.

Trina Flowers said...

Jandeef,

That's great and I support it 100% but what I still have trouble understanding is why isn't the same "stand for humanity" applied for ALL and most especially for the third country nationals (TCNs) laboring in Kuwait?

Too many times while I was in Kuwait too many Kuwaitis would ask me why was I helping TCNs because they were nothing but "rubbish!"

I realize that doesn't apply to all Kuwaitis but given the lack of Kuwait law being equally applied it gives credence that while some Kuwaitis break the law and are human rights abusers many Kuwaitis do absolutely nothing and certainly aren't taking any "stand for TCNs' humanity" or even their legal rights!

Since many of these TCNs aren't paid their salaries they have to eat from garbage dumpsters--I know because I had to do the same for a while myself and that's where I met many of them and documented their cases.

From the "Arab Times" 29 July 2006:

'The government must be strict with those who are tough on expatriate workers and treat them inhumanly'

Although the US State Department’s latest report on the condition of expatriate manpower in Kuwait is a little exaggerated, some points are worth scrutinizing and need to be highlighted, especially as some such workers are being really misused. Among expatriate workers in the country, domestic maids are the worst affected because they are being unfairly treated by some merciless people.

Some expatriates don’t receive their full rights, especially those whose necks are in the hands of a powerful company or person. The government must be strict with those who are tough on expatriate workers and treat them inhumanly.

e-mail: ahmedjarallah@hotmail.com

Why hasn't and doesn't the Kuwait government do this especially after all the evidence and hundreds of thousands of victims over the years? Of course, Kuwait is not the only Middle Eastern country that allows these horrendous practices; however, why the double standards?

You may then begin to understand as one news commentator said, "the global indifference" to the Israeli and Lebanese conflict.

Some may think since certain countries treat their guest workers so badly, why should they be helped?

Governments may make the decisions to go to war, but it's people who fight them.

Jandeef,

I won't belabor the point here as there are numerous other venues for that, but there is way too much evidence to prove it is NOT applied to ALL TCNs unless of course you are referring to the discriminatory practices.

Jandeef said...

In this matter I speak for myself and my co-bloggers in SS. If you've got evidence on one of us being discriminatory or promoting discrimination, post it on your blog and we can discuss it there.

As to inhumane practices by the Kuwaiti government or kuwaitis, I don't speak for neither of them. In fact one of the reason this blog was started, and is still online, is the injustice being done by the government and some kuwaitis to both Kuwaitis and non kuwaitis.

Trina Flowers said...

Jandeef,

Obviously you didn't read my comment carefully. I was not and am not accusing you or your co-bloggers of discriminatory practices on this blog (I am accusing and have loads of evidence of the Kuwait government doing that)!

As to your second paragraph, I well know this. I have been in that fight much longer than you have (and I can prove it) if you would like.

And as I've said before on this blog and in other venues about you guys--job well done and keep it up!

One thing I've noticed about some Arab bloggers is they don't always read carefuly enough and then accuse a commentator of committing ad hominem!

Why is that? By the way, I've noticed you use the acronym SS frequently, what does it stand for?

Jandeef said...

Trina

I did read your comment carefully. I was speaking for us when I said “we’re standing up for humanity,” and you replied to my name and that statement, so it appeared to be directed at us. Also, haven’t you noticed non-Arab bloggers do mis-read comments as well?

As to government practices, couldn’t agree more.

I’m proud of your much-longer-than-we-have efforts. I didn’t mention anything about your efforts, so no need to prove anything. In the end you’re doing that for a good deed, not to prove it to me.

Thanks for your kind words, and SS stands for Sahat Al-Safat.

:)

Trina Flowers said...

Jandeef,

I replied to you by name since you had replied to me by name, so I can see where you might have taken my comment to mean you personally even though it was directed to the audience in general. I'll be more careful about that in the future and thanks for pointing it out to me.

And yes you're right about non-Arab bloggers, they do not always read carefully either. Based on my personal experience it seems that more Arab bloggers will take comments personally when it was intended as a general statement.

Thanks for your kind words as well; I fervently believe in fighting any type of injustice anywhere it takes place on principle--forget the good deeds aspect--it's the right thing to do for all humanity because without that there would be no humanity.

Some bloggers on Kuwait blogs have accused me of only going after the injustices in Kuwait and ignoring those in my own country, which is not true. I'm going after them just as hard and since our system is somewhat different I am having success with exposing some of the criminal activities that have taken place between Americans and Kuwaitis to the detriment of many different nationalities in Kuwait, Iraq and the US.

Hopefullly, when all the evidence has been reviewed and certain issues investigated by the appropriate agencies those that are guilty will not only be exposed for what they are and have done, but will also be punished as they should be. And those that were victimized will be compensated for the illegal injustices they suffered.

Trina Flowers,

You've been posting about Kuwait's lack of human rights even though the current topic on the board is Lebanon-Israel mess. I am interested in hearing your opinion on this new Middle East Mess. With Israel invading Lebanon and US supporting them unconditionally. What do you think of your gov't unconditional support for Israel? What do you think of Israel's human rights violations? Israel has received billions of dollars from US since its creation. What Israel is doing to Palestine and Lebanon is paid by American tax payers' money. The weapons used for Qana massacre and other massacres were made in America.

Most Americans and Westerners I know are very afraid of criticizing Israel publicly because they don't to be labeled as "anti-Semite". You claim that you are human rights activist. Do you condemn Israel's actions? Or do you defend Israel's actions?

I am really interested in knowing your opinion. Western governments are known for their double standards. There is an Arabic saying that says

Its rough translation is " True word is meant to be used to do unjust acts." It may become clearer in this example. US invasion of Iraq: Saddam Hussein should be removed (true words) but these words were used to remove/weaken another enemy of Israel and not to mention the oil factor. Saddam wasn't removed because US gov't is interested in spreading democracy in Middle East.

If you know to know what I think of human rights violations in Kuwait, I do think they do exist against everyone (Kuwaitis and non-Kuwaitis). As long as you are weak, people will stomp on you whether you are Kuwaiti or non-Kuwaiti.

Yes, religious fundamantalists project what is handed down to them of ancient mythologies on modern day affairs.

George Bush really believes that a man struck the red sea, and behold, the promised land is in sight.

The scary thing is that Bush is in the White House, not a leader of a street gang in L.A.

Trina Flowers said...

Mother Courage,

Jandeef and I covered that issue in this post, so I'd prefer not to repeat myself.

Making a difference in q8,

You said it perfectly: "NEW Middle East MESS!"

I will say that I am personally AGAINST ALL WARS--I decided that when for years I was protesting the Vietnam war and as I was marking big red Xs each day on my calender for each day one of the many people (family and friends) survived and didn't come back in a body bag to an ungrateful nation that put us in a war that we should have never been in and all the ramifications of it that can still be felt today in this country.

I am just as against ALL human rights violations regardless of the type of violations or the person or the COUNTRY who is committing them or allowing them to happen.

I am also against the US government using taxpayers' money in ways that most of us have no say so in or are even allowed to know about!

I am not against a person simply because s/he is a Christian, Jew, Muslim or whatever religious affilation s/he may be. What I am against is if that person hijacks that religion to her/his own ends and manages to brainwash others into their scheme as well especially when it may effect numerous others lives in a detrimental way.

Most if not all governments are known for their double standards and ALL politicians LIE!

I have always said that some Kuwaitis were victims of human rights violations in Kuwait by other Kuwaitis and I went on record in trying to help them also.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't much of Kuwait's military hardware "Made in America?"

16 years ago today, Saddam invaded Kuwait; did Kuwait have a right to defend itself? Was Kuwait able to defend herself?

Trina Flowers,

Thanks for replying.

Every decent human is against wars but where do you stand exactly on this issue? You didn't clearly say where do you stand on *this* war. Some people think what Israel is doing right thing, others are with Hezbollah. There are also people who are not with Hezbollah but with the Lebanese. I think what Hezbollah did was wrong cuz they went into Israel but I also condemn Israel's actions cuz their reaction was out of control. Israel needed the incentive to crush Lebanon and that is what Hezbollah has given them. I really feel bad for the Lebanese because they are used to settle everyone's differences.

If there were pro-Israel protests that defend Israeli's right to defend itself and Pro-Lebanon protests that condemn Israeli actions (it doesn't mean pro-Hezbollah), Where would we see you? :-)

I wonder if you fear condemning Israelis publicly because you are using your true name or you don't have any problems with what Israelis are doing with Lebanon.

Making a difference in Q8,

First, let me state that I believe Hezbollah to be a terrorist organization. Part of my education was studying terrorism and various terrorist groups with different causes. This is where I first learned of Hezbollah and saw different films of their activities and also read much about their "work."

With that said, I also have met many Lebanese people (mostly in Kuwait) and I liked them. I even tried to help a couple of them whose human rights had been excessively abused in Kuwait (but those are other stories).

I completely separate Hezbollah from the "ordinary" Lebanese people.

Hezbollah was dead wrong to kidnap the Israeli soldiers. They alone started this latest conflict.

As for Israel, to my knowledge I have never met an Israeli even though I do know a number of Jewish people. I like them as well.

I think Israel is justified to get back her soldiers, but I also think that perhaps excessive measures were taken. However, I do believe that this incident was the catalyst for a broader campaign that has been in the making for quite sometime with the help of her allies.

Since 9/11 I have said all along that that was the beginning of dividing the east and the west. And I think that will happen unless the current conflicts expand (which I now believe to be very possible if not probable) and the beginning of forming the "new middle east."

I am not as young as I was when I protested Vietnam, nor am I as idealistic as I once was. I've also seen more death and destruction than I care to see, so as for protesting the latest conflict--I'll sit this one out.

I hope ALL terrorist organizations are annihilated, but not at the expense of innocent civilians or countries' infrastructures and economies. How that can be accomplished I guess is the
$64,000.00 question.

"First, let me state that I believe Hezbollah to be a terrorist organization. Part of my education was studying terrorism and various terrorist groups with different causes. This is where I first learned of Hezbollah and saw different films of their activities and also read much about their "work."

I was wondering if your studies didn't show you the "work" of the largest instigator of terrorism in the region, which is Israel.
We all know that the UK is the US's poodle. Yet, these are the words of British Foreign Office Minister Kim Howells:
quote
Israel is responsible for state sponsored terrorism in Lebanon and Palestine. Destruction of the infrastructure and killing of civilians is used as a collective punishment. There is an endless spate of war crimes by Israel in this region. USA and its allies have directly or indirectly encouraged Israel to punish its neighbors.
end quote
Of course the difference between the "terrorists" Hezbollah, whom you claim to have "studied", and Israel, is that one is a two-bit organisation with WW2 era weapons lacking any air threat, and the other is a state force armed to the teeth with nuclear devices courtesy of your tax dollars. Who do you think poses more of a threat to me? I think you need to re-take that terrorism course somewhere else.

"Hezbollah was dead wrong to kidnap the Israeli soldiers. They alone started this latest conflict."

I see, so when Israel kidnapped the members of a democratically elected government, they did not provoke a conflict? When Israel continues to assasinate people at will, they are not terrorists? When Israel continues to illegally occupy land, they are not laying the foundation for war in the region? Too much Fox News, I say.

"though I do know a number of Jewish people. I like them as well."

Personally, I couldn't make a blanket statement like that of liking or disliking anybody soley based on their religion. But its making sense now.

"I think Israel is justified to get back her soldiers,"

By waging war? And you claim to be anti-war? So, that means the Palestinians, Lebanese, and Syrians are all justified in liberating their lands, in whichever means they desire.

"but I also think that perhaps excessive measures were taken."

If this isn't the undertstatement of the year, I don't know what is.

"However, I do believe that this incident was the catalyst for a broader campaign that has been in the making for quite sometime with the help of her allies."

The fact of the matter is that this conflict has nothing to do with kidnapped soldiers. It was in the cards, and the kidnapping was a convenient premise. If it wasn't this incident, it would have been something else. This war is so right for Israel and the US for several reasons I won't detail here.

"Since 9/11 I have said all along that that was the beginning of dividing the east and the west."

This so called "division" has been manufactured by an alliance of some shady figures with a clear agenda. 9-11 could have been prevented, but that would have made implementing their agenda that much harder.

"I hope ALL terrorist organizations are annihilated"

And the most dangerous of the those organisations is the entity called Israel, but they're not included, because you "like them".
See what Chomsky has to say about that, and I'm sure you like him, as well.

"How that can be accomplished I guess is the $64,000.00 question."

Don't pay your taxes that are killing babies. That would be a start.

From:http://www.timesonline.co.uk/newspaper/0,,174-2289232,00.html

Israel backed by army of cyber-soldiers
From Yonit Farago in Jerusalem

WHILE Israel fights Hezbollah with tanks and aircraft, its supporters are campaigning on the internet.
Israel’s Government has thrown its weight behind efforts by supporters to counter what it believes to be negative bias and a tide of pro-Arab propaganda. The Foreign Ministry has ordered trainee diplomats to track websites and chatrooms so that networks of US and European groups with hundreds of thousands of Jewish activists can place supportive messages.

In the past week nearly 5,000 members of the World Union of Jewish Students (WUJS) have downloaded special “megaphone” software that alerts them to anti-Israeli chatrooms or internet polls to enable them to post contrary viewpoints. A student team in Jerusalem combs the web in a host of different languages to flag the sites so that those who have signed up can influence an opinion survey or the course of a debate.

Jonny Cline, of the international student group, said that Jewish students and youth groups with their understanding of the web environment were ideally placed to present another side to the debate.

“We’re saying to these people that if Israel is being bashed, don’t ignore it, change it,” Mr Cline said. “A poll like CNN’s takes just a few seconds to vote in, but if thousands take part the outcome will be changed. What’s vital is that the international face of the conflict is balanced.”

Doron Barkat, 29, in Jerusalem, spends long nights trawling the web to try to swing the debate Israel’s way. “When I see internet polls for or against Israel I send out a mailing list to vote for Israel,” he said. “It can be that after 15 minutes there will be 400 votes for Israel.

“It’s very satisfying. There are also forums where Lebanese and Israelis talk.”

Israel’s Foreign Ministry must avoid direct involvement with the campaign but is in contact with international Jewish and evangelical Christian groups, distributing internet information packs.

Amir Gissin, the Israeli Foreign Ministry’s public relations director, said: “The internet’s become a leading tool for news, shaping the world view of millions. Our problem is the foreign media shows Lebanese suffering, but not Israeli. We’re bypassing that filter by distributing pictures showing how northern Israelis suffer from Katyusha rocket attacks.”

If what you are saying is true, then I believe that Israel is making a good initiative, and before you go labeling me, I would like to say that I wish that we were the ones who took thit initiative, at least we would have proven that we are people who solve our disputes in a civilized manner, not by suicide bombers. By getting to show the other party the other side of the fence. And maybe win a mutual respect.
The net is full of hatred to Christians, Jews as well as Muslims. What if all those mentalities interacted be it intended or by chance. And got to understand and accept other points of view. Wouldn’t that be a more civilized manner to solve our disputes? The real weapon today is not the conventional weapons that took us nowhere but to more loss. Internet is the weapon of today

Ayya,

Good point and well said!

Unknown said...

Ayya,

This article reminded me of how dirty some of the Israelis and Pro-Israelis work. When they see any message that criticizes Israel's human rights violations backed with evidence, they pretty much mess up the message board. They post hateful messages and everyone who has posted a message criticizing Israel ends up in the "list". One of my acquaintances is an American university lecturer who teaches Political Science in one of the US universities. When he posted a message about Israeli's human violations on a message board, he was bombarded with thousands of "hateful" emails daily (one email but repeated thousands of times). The Israelis used a spamming machine to crash down his email server. He ended up shutting down his email account. He isn't the only case I know who had been through that.

re: using the 'net

I admit we should work on improving Journalism in the Arab countries. The Arab media has been posting about Palestinians and now Lebanese suffrage for decades but still, there isn't any world wide outrage. Either we are failing to spread "the cause" or the receiving end of the transmission is biased. Or it could a mix of both. It's hard to do when most of the Western media is very biased towards Israel. Do you know the majority of the popular media networks around the world is owned by Rupert Murdoch? Westerns accuse us of being brain-washed when it is really the other way around. We have satellites that air thousands of channels in different languages. Many speak different languages (either English, French, Persian or whatever). We know our state-media is BS. That's why we tune to different channels to hear the news. We tune in to what we like to see and what we don't like to see. We make our choices but other Westerns (i.e. British and Americans). Majority of them speak the English language only because English is the most used language so they are not forced to learn another language. And even if they speak other languages. It will most likely be Spanish, French , etc. These languages won't give you a chance to read the other side of the story especially if most popular Media networks are actually owned by the same person.

As for blowing up themselves up, I don't blame the Palestinians when they do it 'cause as my physics teacher said "pressure leads to explosions". If you take their lands, kill their children, cut their olive trees, bomb their houses and farms, use them as human shields, take away their hope, etc. What do you expect them to do? React rationally??? They waited for the world to react but nothing happened. They don't have advanced technologies like the Israelis do which makes it even more frustrating and hopeless. They gotta do what they gotta do to inflict damage. It's the only way for them resist. That's what happens when your hope is taken away from you and you have nothing to lose.

AyyA said...

Making a difference in Q8
About misusing the net and spasms, this is also palpable when it comes to some Islamic organizations that shower your mail with hatred to Jews and the necessity of jihad; this is not my side of argument. However; rational debate is, and the Net opens the opportunity for that. Palestinians are all over the globe. Not necessarily in the West Bank and many of them including the ones in Israel have access to internet and have the opportunity to present their case. And who is better to present this case than the ones who were estranged from their own land? Yet, I do not see suicide bombing as the solution to their agony and do not approve of it no matter what is the case. The art of communication is important, may be we don’t speak the same language when we need to get sympathy. For example; two days back Ahmadinijad demanded “destruction to Israel!”, Moslems protesting around the world and raising the slogans of death to Israel. While Israel justifies his atrocities by calling it self defense against terrorism. Look at the big picture, Israel has been acknowledged as a sovereign state around the world for almost sixty years. No one had wronged the Palestinians more than the Arabs and Moslems who gave them false hope. Look at reality; Israel is a powerful entity that imposed itself and we never had the means to fight it, let alone destroy it. The more we hang on to these slogans, the less land we are left with and the more souls sacrificed. It’s time to make a truce. And don’t tell me that this can’t be done with a conqueror, because Islamization and Arabization did not exactly spread around the globe with chocolate and flowers.

Unknown said...

Ayya,

You mean accepting defeat. Declaring truce only works when the opponents are of similar strength and power. Accepting defeat is when one side is weak and the other side is too powerful to be crushed. Israel is all strong and powerful because of US unconditional support. With US vetoing any UN resolutions are not of interest of Israel, You can't do much. Arabs and Muslims are weak because they removed them selves from what has united them which is religion. We pray that Allah helps the Palestinians and Lebanese when in most Islamic countries, they sell alcohol, have night clubs, spread corruption in all forms, etc.. Allah won't change things for us until we change things within ourselves. That's why we should start to clean up the mess in our country.

The world recognized Israel and we should make truce but according to which borders? 1947 or 1967? or 1990s? or whatever. I am all for truce when the Palestinians get their rights.

For those resistant movements in Palestine, the suicide method isn't a way to communicate their cause to the world. In the contrary, it is a way to communicate to Israelis that they are going to resist until the end. If we had been still occupied by the Iraqis, you would have most likely approved of it as a method of fighting back. Without hope, you will do anything to inflect damage on your enemy. Like I said in my previous message, you have biased Western media that won't report those incidents and you have people not working hard enough to spread the cause. We should learn from the Israelis or Pro-Israeli lobby in US 'cause they are very good at propaganda and using "anti-Semitism" excuse to get what they want. I guess we should work on the "islamophobia" excuse to get what we want too. :-)

I believe illegal occupation is only removed with power and fighting back. There aren't any examples of illegal occupations that were removed before they had suffered huge costs (dead soldiers, loss of $$$, etc.). Enemies only withdraw when they see their soldiers' bodies piling up and being sent off to their countries in plastics bags or had suffered huge cost. Algeria had sacrificed more than 1 million of their people to free themselves from the French occupation. It is price for freedom which came high but was worth it. Another example was during the 20-year Israel invasion of Lebanon, Israel had to withdraw because their soldiers' bodies started to pile up and they were wasting too much of their money on a war they couldn't win.

Well I am off now. It was nice discussing with you. :-)
